Solar-powered Books: Capitola Library and OE Build The Future of Reading

Capitola Branch Library in California

Public spaces should be as resilient as they are welcoming. We helped the Capitola Library achieve that, and we were honored to join the Santa Cruz Public Libraries on Saturday, January 24th, to celebrate the official ribbon-cutting of the Capitola Branch Library’s new solar and energy storage microgrid.

A Vision for Net-Zero

Nearly a year ago, OurEnergy partnered with Allterra Solar and Sandbar Solar to provide infrastructure consulting and design support for this ambitious initiative. Our primary goal was to helped the library achieve net-zero energy consumption, and we’re incredibly honored  to have helped that vision become a reality for our community.

Beyond Electricity: Building Resilience

This microgrid is more than just a technical achievement; it transforms the library into a model of energy resilience. By utilizing solar power paired with energy storage, the library can now remain operational during power outages, ensuring it stays a reliable resource for the community when they need it most, for example by providing a safe shelter during storms or other emergencies.

Community-Driven Sustainability

This project is a true testament to what can be achieved through local collaboration. The initiative was made possible through financing by the Friends of the Capitola Branch Library, utilizing proceeds from their bookstore in the Capitola Mall. Seeing local businesses, non-profits, and the community come together for a sustainable future is what makes this milestone so special.

We extend our deepest gratitude and congratulations to all our partners and everyone involved in making this public space greener and more resilient. Let’s continue to power the future together! ☀️⚡
